What is the step of waste foam recycling?

After the foam is discarded, there are four places to go – incinerate, landfill, recycle, and abandon the natural environment. Foam is an artificial substance that is difficult to degrade and decomposes very slowly under natural conditions. But in fact, foam plastics can be recycled and reused as raw materials for plastics and materials for heat generation. Turn waste into treasure – this is the most ideal way to dispose of waste foam.

Waste foam recycling involves several stages to convert foam products, such as polystyrene and polyurethane, into reusable materials. The process begins with collection where foam waste is gathered from various sources like packaging, food containers, and insulation materials. Once collected, the foam is sorted to separate it from other waste types, ensuring that contaminants are minimized for the recycling process. Sorting is crucial to maintain the quality of the recycled foam and to ensure it’s properly processed.

Next, the foam is shredded into smaller pieces to make it easier to handle and transport. These pieces are then densified—compressed into dense blocks or pellets—using heat or mechanical pressure. This densification reduces the foam’s bulky volume, making it more manageable and efficient for processing. In some cases, the foam may undergo melting and extrusion for materials like polystyrene, where it is melted and shaped into new forms like sheets or pellets that can be reused for manufacturing new foam products.

Finally, the recycled foam is reformed into new products, such as packaging materials, insulation, or even construction fillers. Depending on the cleanliness of the foam, it may also go through a cleaning process to remove contaminants before it’s reused. While foam recycling can be complex and costly due to challenges like contamination and the need for specialized equipment, it offers significant environmental benefits by reducing waste and conserving resources, ultimately turning foam waste into valuable new materials.

For foam recycling, a GREENMAX foam densifier can be used. GREENMAX Foam Densifier compresses the foam to a volume that is 1/90 the original. The discarded foam is converted into a foam block by compression/hot melt processing of a GREENMAX foam densifier. The compressed or heated foam block is granulated by INTCO Recycling, and becomes regenerated particles that can be reused, and then made into a finished photo frame, thereby  increasing the recy cling and utilization value of the foam.
