Foam recycling needs professional facilities to help

Styrofoam(polystyrene foam) is a lightweight, rigid cellular plastic that is used widely as a packaging medium. Its shock absorbing characteristics lend it to uses as storage and transport of fragile and expensive items such as electronic equipment, chemicals and wines.

A big problem with recycling polystyrene foam was, until recently, that processors couldn’t load enough of the material on a truck to make it worth shipping.

Polystyrene foam is very lightweight, yet bulky. So the material takes up a lot of volume relative to its weight than other, denser materials. That problem may have been addressed by fairly new technology that can densify it, allowing 40,000 pounds of foam can to be loaded onto a single trailer. The remaining obstacle for recyclers is finding a way to collect enough foam to take advantage of densification’s benefits.

A few companies are working to widen the stream, including some food and beverage packaging manufacturers. These companies are engaging in efforts including promoting curbside recycling and drop-off programs and designing specialized bins for this hard-to-recycle material.

After collecting those recyclable items, you will need another tool to dispose the materials. Foam recycling machines like compactors and densifiers are professional tool for reducing the foam volume. The small volume materials can be easily stocked on the pallets and sold to be recycled. And you must know that a few tons a moth, you can cover your costs for the machine.
